Star Trek: Music From The Video Games by various artists (album review)

Despite the potential that obviously exists, one might argue there has never been a solid ‘Star Trek’ video game that had mass appeal.

Sure ‘Star Trek: Online’ came close and ‘Borg’ is pretty decent but they’ve never been what they could be. Other entries have come across as insipid and, frankly, a bit of a lame cash-in.

Unfortunately, the soundtracks aren’t much different. Don’t get me wrong, hearing the first bars of the theme tune will always send chills down my spine but that’s about it as far as the music of ‘Star Trek’ goes. Let’s face it, no piece of ‘Star Trek’ incidental music besides the fight scenes that have been co-opted by ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Futurama’ ever stood out. Even the battle soundtracks seem to go on a bit and fail to inspire.

A large bulk of the album is made up of the ‘Borg’ game and it does offer up the best moments of the collection, with ‘Goldsmith has been assimilated’ being a particular highlight. However, with 16 tracks from that one game, it begs the question, why wasn’t this game soundtrack released on its own, especially given the many other ‘Star Trek’ games on the market.

Even the best video game soundtrack loses something when listened to in isolation and this collection is no different. There’s nothing wrong with any of the tracks, I would just suggest playing the games or listening to the show’s theme instead.
