Joe Dever’s local newspaper, the East London and West Sussex Guardian, is reporting that author Joe – creator of the Lone Wolf series of gaming adventure books (let’s call it a craze, it was a craze), has passed away age 60 after unexpected bile duct surgery caused him to cancel on a SFF and gaming convention in Lucca, Italy.

Joe created the fictional world of Magnamund in 1977 as a setting for his Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. In 1984, he released the first book of the Lone Wolf series of young-adult gamebooks, and the series went on to sell 11.5 million copies around the globe. He experienced difficulty with his publishers as the game books market began to contract in 1995, until publication ceased in 1998 before the final four books were released.

Since 2003, however, the series enjoyed a revival of interest in France, Italy, Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Poland following the re-release of the game-book series in these territories.

Joe was an all round good guy and fan of the Trigan Empire comic-book series. Another one gone too young.
