Count your DVD/Blu-ray viewings: change to law means everyone must pay-per-view!

Shocking news has reached our ears in the UK that the major DVD/Blu-ray companies have united to collect royalties from all people who’ve watched their products more than six times, which they say, is generous. The cost is uncertain, but as most of the population don’t watch their collection more than a couple of times, their real target is us genre fans. They are already pushing UK’s Parliament to make this law, which, as it will also involve setting a new tax, the Tories are likely to agree to.

Not quite sure how they can enforce it with old DVD/Blu-ray disks, but this move is likely to affect all future sales. I suspect there will be an extra payment at point of sale depending on how many times you want to watch your new movies or TV box sets. The number will then be coded into the disks, so that’s all the plays you will be entitled to. You might get around this with older DVD players or recorders, but there aren’t many of them around any more.

If the pilot scheme works in the UK, the new scheme will quickly be spread across the world. America being next on the hit list. This has come about because of the reduced number of DVD/Blu-ray sales.

Here at SFcrowsnest we think this will put the coffin lid on the entire industry and you should protest before the new plan is implemented.
