Geoff Willmetts has been editor at SFCrowsnest for some 15 plus years now, showing a versatility and knowledge in not only Science Fiction, but also the sciences and arts, all of which has been displayed here through editorials, reviews, articles and stories. With the latter, he has been running a short story series under the title of ‘Psi-Kicks’
If you want to contribute to SFCrowsnest, read the guidelines and show him what you can do. If it isn’t usable, he spends as much time telling you what the problems is as he would with material he accepts. This is largely how he got called an Uncle, as in Dutch Uncle. He’s not actually Dutch but hails from the west country in the UK.

Raiders! The Story Of The Greatest Fan Film Ever Made (2016) (Blu-ray/dvd film review).

I have to confess that when I saw the title and blurb for this release, I only saw ‘Raiders!’ and assumed I was going to be seeing a kid variant of 11-18 year-olds, as they aged during the time it took filming, as they did their own version of ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’. Without […]

Horror Film Aesthetics: Creating The Visual Language Of Fear by Thomas M. Sipos (book review).

Thomas M. Sipos is likely to cause controversy with his opening chapter to his book, ‘Horror Film Aesthetics: Creating The Visual Language Of Fear’. After all, how do you define ‘horror’ as its likely to vary a lot in any discussion? To my mind, ‘horror’ is an aspect added to any story to send a […]

Legion Of Super-Heroes: When Evil Calls by Paul Levitz, Geraldo Borges, Yildiray Cinar and Phil Jimenez (graphic novel review).

This is, I assume, the final volume of ‘Legion Of Super-Heroes: When Evil Calls’ before the ‘New 52’ consists of Adventure Comics # 523-529, Legion Of Super-Villains # 1 and Legion Of Super-Heroes # 11-16. The initial section looks at candidates in the Legion Academy. Unlike previous LSH realities, those rejected for various reasons can […]

Back Issue # 91 September 2016 (magazine review).

With a cover showing Batman sending the Guy Gardner Green Lantern flying with a single punch, it should come as no surprise that this ‘Back Issue’ is sub-titled ‘All-Jerks Issue!’. To us British, who don’t use the term ‘jerk’, these are just obnoxious people who get up everyone’s nose. Saying that, I do have to […]

Time Of The Doctor: The Unoffical And Unauthorised Guide To Doctor Who: 2012 & 2013 by Stephen James Walker (book review).

As author Stephen James Walker points out in the introduction to the long-titled ‘Time Of The Doctor: The Unofficial And Unauthorised Guide To Doctor Who: 2012 & 2013’, the modern series 7 was split across two years. As showrunner Steven Moffat points out, he didn’t want ‘Doctor Who’ become an expected occasion at a particular […]

Charlie Jade: The Complete Series One (2005) (DVD SF TV film series review)

When the end of the opening scene of the first episode where balls are exchanged between two alternative world realities with a return message saying ‘Our balls are bigger than your balls’, you realise that the 2005 ‘Charlie Jade’ SF series should be worth watching. I should point out that this series is not comedy […]

NASA Saturn V Owners’ Workshop Manual: 1967-1973 (Apollo 4 To Apollo 17 And Skylab by W. David Woods (book review)

Back in the early 1960s, America decided that they would need a big rocket if ever they wanted to go to the Moon. Looking at the design of the Juno that became known by its alternative name as the Saturn V, compared to other rockets, then they achieved that but it wasn’t an easy build. […]

Illustrators # 15 (magazine review).

Remember me writing that there was another month before the next issue of ‘Illustrators’ was due earlier in the month? I had a nice surprise when issue 15 came through the letterbox. For those buying, I should point out that these magazines come in protective plastic bags inside cardboard packing. By far the biggest section […]

The Physics And Astronomy Of Science Fiction by Steven D. Bloom (book review).

The sub-title of Steven D. Bloom’s book, ‘The Physics And Astronomy Of Science Fiction’ is ‘Understanding Interstellar Travel, Teleportation, Time Travel, Alien Life And Other Genre Fixtures’. Just so you know what the 10 chapters in this book will cover. I suspect there wasn’t room on the cover to add robots, weaponry and super-humans, although […]

Behind The Throne (The Indranan War book 1) by K.B. Wagers (book review).

I suspect like me you’d think the first person character of K.B. Wagers’ novel ‘Behind The Throne’ was a male from reading the first twenty or so pages, not to mention why ‘Hail’ was being used as a noun. It isn’t until a few pages in that things started to become more apparent and that […]
